Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation about the recent awards show was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve with a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously flexible, letting players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
